Call for Entries Special Residency Project – Valencia 02

Deadline Monday 26 March, 6pm (UK time)

Residency in Valencia

Duration: 1 – 31 May 2012

ArtFunkl is pleased to offer artists a special residency opportunity for a 1 month stay in the beautiful  western Mediterranean city of Valencia, Spain.

Description of Residency

The residency in Valencia is part of a new programme “Special Projects”. These are one-off residencies orchestrated by ArtFunkl in collaboration with other artists, curators or studio groups. The objective of these residencies is to open up the scope of the network of artists ArtFunkl hosts. Artists who take part in these special residencies will have a page on the ArtFunkl website, alongside the artists who have carried out their residency in Manchester.

Valencia is a city immersed in layers of history leading up to the present day. Ancient buildings are positioned side by side with the most modern up to date examples of Architecture, and is it this contrast which gives Valencia it’s sense of intrigue and dynamic.

For this project ArtFunkl is looking for artists who believe that a chance to absorb the energy of this fascinating city would benefit their practice.

Accommodation is in a comfortable apartment on the edge of the city centre. The apartment has a double bedroom, and a single bedroom/study room which can be set up as a studio space.

The residency is most suitable for writers, or artists who work with digital media, since there is no separate studio space included.

Please note there is no Wifi connection in the building, but internet access can be found in many bars and cafes in the city centre.

Fees

The cost of this residency is £750 for the month of May 2012. This includes all household bills.

For application details and forms, see below.

Open Studio Morphallaxis 06

Artists in Residence – Sophie Graniou and Ding Ren (29th August – 9th October 2011)

Open Studio 6 October 2011

6 – 8pm

Sophie Graniou’s fascination for the supernatural has lead her on a trail to track down sites where haunted happenings have taken place in the Manchester area. Her installation work created at ArtFunkl draws together her findings, and seeks to recreate the sites, sounds, and emotions of the experiences she has documented.

Food, specifically sustainable production and associated supply channels, have been the focus of research carried out by Ding Ren during her residency in Manchester. Ding set out to gain an overview of how the geographical elements of the area influence the infra-structure of environmentally conscious food production. Using the conclusions of this investigation, she has drawn a comparative cultural study of this sector which encompasses the local environment in Greater Manchester, and other places in the world she has previously documented.

Timescale: 6 weeks from 1 November 2011

(1 November – 13 December 2011)

Description of Residency

ArtFunkl is looking for adventurous, enthusiastic people who would like to visit Manchester during the pre-Christmas season, and experience the city at a time when there is an intense amount of activity, both in the Art World, and in the social scene in general.

Residency 9: Morphallaxis 08

Timescale: 6 weeks from 9 January 2012

Residency 10: Morphallaxis 09

Timescale: 6 weeks from 23 February 2012

Description of Residency

The Morphallaxis series of 6 week long artist residencies has been devised as a means to progress ideas inaugurated in previous projects, both those related to the artist’s personal practice, and those which have emerged through the ArtFunkl programme.

The main focus of this residency programme is to explore the use of the ArtFunkl concept, both as a venue for producing and exhibiting work, and as a source for generating projects elsewhere in the city of Manchester and its vicinity.

Previous artists in residence have employed specific attitudes towards the cultural, historical and creative structures of Manchester, and used these as generating factors. This has resulted in work which has a resonance to the surroundings, and connects with the practices of other artists in the area. ArtFunkl‘s aim with the Morphallaxis programme is to uncover, re-invent, and re-imagine artistic practice, relevant to the contemporary debate regarding Visual Art in the Manchester context.

You will:

Have space and time to work on your own project.

Show your work during the final week of the residency in an Open Studio event

Be involved in devising and constructing the exhibition space for your Open Studio

Open Studio Morphallaxis 05

Artists in Residence Paula Petroll and Danielle O’Malley

Morphallaxis 05 Residency, 16 July – 27 August 2011

Open Studio Private View – 6 – 9pm on Thursday 25 August 2011

Working in many different media, Danielle O’Malley draws inspiration from traditions of American and European folklore. She adds a contemporary overlay to this, using collage to piece together eclectic tableaux of characters and situations, which sweetly build a dark imaginary world. This realm inhabits a shadowy and slightly sinister area somewhere between consciousness and dream.
The work of Paula Petroll is focused on a development towards the realization of pure form, referencing nothing and beholden only to itself. Paula’s interest in space, time and geometry is expressed in the position and intensity of the lines she chooses. She builds these into worlds within worlds, which have a sense of constant unfolding in a process of continuous expansion.
