Artists-in-Residence Satoko Nagashima (Japan) & Sònia Ferré Toneu (Spain)
Residency – Metamorphosis 01 : 4 February – 17 March 2012
The theme of Sakoto Nagashima’s latest works is “identity”, informed by her interpretation of the work of Erik.H.Erikson (psychologist). She uses silk screen prints of carefully chosen words, in Japanese kanji, to create portraiture, landscapes and cityscapes.
During her residency at ArtFunkl, Satoko has developed a new series of works specific to the context of her last 6 weeks. Using her screen print technique on painted canvas, she has delicately built up cityscapes of Manchester. There is a magical transformation inherent in the merging of scenes from a UK industrial city with Japanese calligraphy; the practical, historically informed sense of place, with an emblem strongly representative of the identity of a distant land, and a different way of living.
