Open Studio – Metamorphosis 04 Residency

Artist in Residence – Sullivan Goba-Blé, France

Metamorphosis 04 Residency, 26 July – 6 September 2012

Open Studio Private View: 4 – 6pm on Sunday 2 September 2012

Sullivan Goba-Blé is primarily a painter, however for his residency at ArtFunkl he  chose to concentrate on a series of drawings, which allowed him a more immediate access into the depths of his process. This worked as a means of exploring new possibilities for the representation of his ideas. He used the studio as a way of thinking; and used this way of thinking to centre a subject in a space.

For Goba-Blé waste becomes resource, hidden becomes shown, repulsion becomes attraction, inert becomes present, and doubt coverts to conviction. Empty states, blocked windows, screening elements create rhythms that play. Urban life especially interests him (he also works as a graffiti artist), questions that he focuses on regarding this and his practice turn around on themselves, and can be reflected in the urban environment. The energy of the metropolis cannot be ignored, and is a vital element to the interrogatory stance that he works with. His current body of work is installation based, concentrating on the idea of pile, and reflecting on questions of how much information should be revealed, how much left in the darkness.
