Artist Statement J. J. Foley

“From my earliest memories, I have drawn, and my subjects were always people. It has been a lifelong fascination, my love of the beauty inherent in every person. It is my hope that this is what comes through in my paintings and that in some way people will be conscious not so much of what society calls beautiful, but the kind of uniqueness I see in each person. I hope ordinary people will begin to see the extraordinary beauty in themselves.  I have never found anything in nature as lovely.

During my stay here in Valencia, with the Artfunkl Residency Programme,  I have worked directly from life, and have explored color relationships within these figure studies.  The time and energy I have been able to devote to this experience has been very productive and positive.  I will never forget my visit here and hope to take the boldness and beauty of Valencia home with me through the art that I will make in the future.”

J. J. Foley is an American artist living in Pass Christian, Mississippi.

The Valencia residency, organized by ArtFunkl Artists Residency and Initiative, based in Manchester, UK, is part of a series of off-site residencies orchestrated by ArtFunkl in collaboration with artists, curators or studio groups based in the area where the residency takes place. Artists taking part in this programme benefit from the knowledge of local artists and curators, and support is tailored to the individual artist’s work and aspirations.
